Many readers may be relieved to learn that contrary to the opening, this blog will not primarily be written in German. In six days I'm setting out from New York to California and back for a quintessential American road trip. The purpose of this space is to provide at least one glimpse per day of the scenes I encounter. In advance I wish to warn you that the images will most likely by from an LG cell phone, as my only other media capture device is an aged Yashika Super-8 camera.
Now, if I haven't scared you off, a brief outline. I'll be leaving from New York on 1 August, driving through New Orleans and Tucson to LA, then up the Pacific Coast Highway and back through the Midwest. I will be accompanied by a friend from college in whose Ford Contour we will be journeying. We will be visiting as many of the sights as possible, and staying with friends or in such luxurious accommodations as parking lots and state parks.

This will be the last entry before we begin driving west. Most of my affairs are in order, though a Gargantuan volume of laundry awaits me for Friday night. Packing for four weeks is much different than the light weekend trips to which I have been accustomed.
